NPDC councillors have voted for a 4.9% rates increase — well below the 10.9% originally projected — but it comes with budget trade-offs.

💲 New Plymouth District Councillors have just voted in favour of a draft Annual Plan for 2026/27 that locks in a 4.9% total rates increase, a significant reduction from the 10.9% increase that was originally projected for this year.

To achieve this lower rate (based on a target of CPI + 1%), the Council has agreed to a Mayoral Recommendation which involves several budget adjustments.

NPDC determined that these changes do not require a formal community consultation process as the plan remains largely in line with the Long-Term Plan 2024-2034. The Annual Plan is set to be formally adopted before 30 June 2026.

Is a 4.9% rates increase a fair outcome, or should Council be pushing for even lower?
