NZTA has confirmed new speed limits for two stretches of SH3 in Taranaki, following public consultation. The ~1km stretch of SH3 at Waiwhakaiho, from just north of Vickers Road to east of the Egmont Road intersection, will soon become 60km/h, reducing from the current 80km/h.
During consultation, NZTA received close to 1000 submissions, and these, along with technical assessments, safety analysis, and cost–benefit information, were considered before reaching the final decision.
The new speed limit will extend the 60km/h speed limit currently in place on SH3 heading north out of New Plymouth. The speed increases to 100 km/h just north of the Egmont Road intersection. Slower speeds will make it safer and easier for people to turn at the busy Egmont Road intersection.
Installation of the new speed limit signs is currently scheduled for mid‑March. The new speed limit will come into effect once the signage is in place.
SH3 Hāwera north
A one kilometre stretch of SH3 Hāwera north will also see a speed change. The road, from just north of Fantham Street to just north of Kerry Road will soon become 60km/h, reducing from a combination of 70 km/h and 100 km/h. A lower speed limit in this location reflects ongoing and future development along this stretch of road.
During consultation, almost 270 submissions were received and these were taken into consideration during the decision making process.
Work is underway to finalise timing for the installation of the new speed limit signs. The new speed limit will take effect once the signage is in place.
