Frédéric Chopin Preludes and Ballades

Bach is an astronomer, discovering the most marvellous stars. Beethoven challenges the universe. I only try to express the soul and the heart of man.

Frédéric Chopin

An artist of extraordinary heart and virtuosity, Piers Lane will perform the complete cycle of Frédéric Chopin’s Preludes and Ballades - the quintessential pairing of artist and programme.

The Preludes are beautifully enigmatic. They are not introductions to anything, but are each perfectly formed musical miniatures that capture a vast array of human emotion and experience. The Ballades, by comparison, express the composer’s Romantic ideals on a larger canvas. Widely considered as being amongst the most significant and difficult solo piano works from the nineteenth century, the four Ballades take the listener on a visceral journey from tender intimacy to serenity, tumult and thunderous heroism.
