          Walks & TrailsOpen Now
This is a good day or overnight tramp, with fantastic views of Taranaki Maunga from Maketawa Hut.

This is a backcountry tramping track and it is rough and overgrown in parts, with lots of tree roots and slippery in places. It is best suited to experienced trampers.

There are several unbridged stream crossings on this circuit. They are generally straightforward to cross, but will rise rapidly with heavy rain and may become impassable.

You can combine these tracks to form a circuit.

Egmont Road end (North Taranaki) to Maketawa Hut via Maketawa Track

          Time: 1 hr 30 min
          Distance: 3.1 km

This lower track passes through native forest with some steps and small ladders.

Egmont Road end (North Taranaki) to Maketawa Hut via Translator Road

          Time: 1 hr 15 min
          Distance: 3.4 km

This is the higher track to the hut. It follows a gravel 4WD track and offers spectacular views of the mountain.

Note: The North Taranaki Visitor Centre is currently under construction. Car parking is limited until December 2026.

Large trucks will be using the road, so please drive carefully and expect occasional delays. We recommend carpooling or using a shuttle if you're planning a visit.

This is the starting point for many walks on this side of the mountain. The Kapuni Loop track meanders its way down the right bank of the Kapuni River where alpine plant species can be found out of their vegetation zone due to water- and wind-borne seed distribution.
