Climb to the top of Paritutu in around 15 minutes to enjoy a bird's eye view of New Plymouth and its coastline from the top of this distinctive volcanic outcrop.

Standing 156 meters tall, this 'rock' is an iconic sight in the New Plymouth landscape, sitting between Back Beach, and Ngāmotu beach.

Don't let the short time frame deceive you—climbing the nearly vertical 100 metres is more of a challenge than a casual stroll. The climb begins gently with a wooden staircase, but quickly increases in difficulty requiring both hands free to pull yourself up the rocky face of Paritutu Rock. This section feels more like an easy rock climb than a walk, but with a sturdy chain to grip, it's safe and exhilarating. Take a moment to pause, catch your breath, and soak in the phenomenal views along the way.

The car park is at the base of Paritutu with access from Centennial Drive.

          Sturdy footwear is advised.
