There are many access points for this walkway, which is wheelchair and pram-friendly, and is perfectly suitable for all abilities. It is also a popular bike path, with many cyclists also utilising the beautiful track.
To complete the whole walk, begin from the Te Henui Bridge (or the ‘lightning bolt’ bridge as locals call it) on the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway at the East End Reserve, at the eastern end of Buller Street.
Key points of interest include:
- The Devon Street bridge underpass just past the Fitzroy bowls greens presents the opportunity to encounter hungry ducks waiting for a treat.
- Just after the Northgate bridge is an entrance to Te Henui Cemetery where you can detour off the path and up the hill to view the spectacular section of gardens, heavily planted with trees and flowers and lovingly maintained by volunteers.
- Back on the path, just over another bridge, there are ample tranquil spots by the river to put down a picnic blanket, or a little further down, popular river swimming spots.
- Along the route, you will also pass the sites of Puketarata Pā, Pukewarangi Pā and Parihamore Pā. Stop to read the signboards explaining the fascinating Māori history in these places and at many other points along the walkway.
