New Plymouth residents are being asked to have their final say on the heavily debated Devon Street West cycle separators before councillors make a definitive ruling in October.
A survey launched today seeks public feedback on the trial layout between Belt Road and Morley Street.
Since May, some of the concrete separators that sparked significant community debate have been replaced with black and yellow rubber alternatives as part of a trial that was requested by Council resolution to help inform a final decision.
The trial also introduced a shared footpath for less confident cyclists on the northern side, a painted on-road cycle lane, a wider median and right-hand turning bay at Cutfield Road, nine new on-street car parks, and a relocated bus stop.
New Plymouth District Mayor Max Brough says it is time to put the issue to bed. He is encouraging anyone who lives, works, or travels along the road and State Highway 45 corridor to participate.
In a statement released by the council, Brough noted he has his own views but stressed the importance of the public survey.
"While I have a personal view on what I would like to see happen, the decision was made by Council to run the trial so this survey is an important part of the process we need to go to through," Brough said.
The council is not just looking for thoughts on the specific trial area. Brough said he wants feedback on the entire corridor, which includes the option of reverting the road completely back to its original design.
"This has just gone on too long and I am sure everyone is over hearing about cycle separators and ‘tim tams’," Brough said. "We’ve just got to get on with it and move on."
The feedback gathered will form part of a report presented to the full council in October for a final decision. Residents have until Sunday 30 August to submit their views via the official NPDC website. Link below 👇
