Feedback sought on controversial Devon Street West cycle separators in New Plymouth

Feedback sought on controversial Devon Street West cycle separators in New Plymouth

Council SurveyCouncil New Plymouth
New Plymouth District Council has launched a survey seeking final public feedback on the trialled Devon Street West cycle separators before a decision in October.

New Plymouth residents are being asked to have their final say on the heavily debated Devon Street West cycle separators before councillors make a definitive ruling in October.

A survey launched today seeks public feedback on the trial layout between Belt Road and Morley Street.

Since May, some of the concrete separators that sparked significant community debate have been replaced with black and yellow rubber alternatives as part of a trial that was requested by Council resolution to help inform a final decision.

The trial also introduced a shared footpath for less confident cyclists on the northern side, a painted on-road cycle lane, a wider median and right-hand turning bay at Cutfield Road, nine new on-street car parks, and a relocated bus stop.

New Plymouth District Mayor Max Brough says it is time to put the issue to bed. He is encouraging anyone who lives, works, or travels along the road and State Highway 45 corridor to participate.

In a statement released by the council, Brough noted he has his own views but stressed the importance of the public survey.

"While I have a personal view on what I would like to see happen, the decision was made by Council to run the trial so this survey is an important part of the process we need to go to through," Brough said.

The council is not just looking for thoughts on the specific trial area. Brough said he wants feedback on the entire corridor, which includes the option of reverting the road completely back to its original design.

"This has just gone on too long and I am sure everyone is over hearing about cycle separators and ‘tim tams’," Brough said. "We’ve just got to get on with it and move on."

The feedback gathered will form part of a report presented to the full council in October for a final decision. Residents have until Sunday 30 August to submit their views via the official NPDC website. Link below 👇

Tim tams. The only people that had their cars damaged by them are people that probably shouldn't be allowed to drive.

Commented on Facebook

You should get the layout of the bumblebee tim tams it's safer for cycling especially for children, people in cars have to learn to slow down.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Get rid of all of them!! TimTam or Bumble Bee the whole lot of them...expensive but they shouldn't have been installed!!

This gravy train of organised fiscal corruption needs to be sent to the sea...

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

a cycleway needs to be regularly swept to keep it clean of debris. will that happen? If council cant do that then dont bother as the cyclists will be reluctant to use for fear of puncture. In auckland we have seen concrete tim tams laid at great expense. everyone seemed to crash in to them. They were picked up and taken away at great expense and dabs of green paint used here and there to highlight cycle lane...and everyone is happy.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

NO! Get rid of them..... ridiculous

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

I think the answer is obvious. The left wing disaster of the council and NZTA created more hazards than it prevented.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

I still don't understand how the amount of money that went into these was justifiable, and that there wasn't something else it could have been spent on...

Commented on Facebook

I avoid Devon Street for this reason. Get rid of everything. I have voted.

The money had been spent it’s useless “having our say” the money is non refundable just another well waste of ratepayers money !

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Should be painted lines, if you have to have barriers the flat bumble bees are more than adequate

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Has the council actually surveyed how many children ride bikes to school in the last 5 years I don’t recall seeing any

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

A distraction for other rates wastage.

Commented on Facebook

Commented on Facebook

Tim tams are so dangerous for cyclists 🚴‍♀️. REMOVE THEM

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Like they listen to the public anyway 🙄 They had very strong opposition to the thing from the very start and still went a head with it.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Remove them they are dangerous

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

The cyclists needs start paying for their lane why should the rate payers keep dipping in to their pockets. Yes some are rate payers but the cars pay petrol tax and soon RUC and only be able quarter of the road

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

They won't listen to us public.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

They will kill someone.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

It limits parking from residences. The units only have one parking spot and most units cater for the elderly generation who can'talways walk that far to a neighbouring street to park. The bumble bees are better but it is such a wide footpath why not utilize that

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Whats the point?? they dont care what we have to say they do what they want an say its what we need even though we say we dont want or need it.

Commented on Facebook

Commented on Facebook

Get rid of the lot the road is for cars and trucks it was not put there for people to walk all over we don’t drive cars and fruck down the foot path because that what it is a FOOTPATH for people to walk on and also bike riders can take quiter street to ride on not state highs Hidhwsys are made for trucks and cars And probely most of the councils should be made to drive a truck down that strip of road and I bet they would change there mind

Commented on Facebook

Being a cyclist myself, I feel uncomfortable with them being in the way. One wrong move, I will on top of them. Just an orange line would be sufficient, Or nothing is the better option 🤷

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

It wasnt broken in the first instance. Fully understand the importance of cycle safety. Since the inception of the "tim tams" all we've really done is burden the rate payers with another exorbitant waste of money, and to some motorists another financial blow upon their vehicles having tyres & wheels unceremoniously damaged (some of their doing). The biggest single impact I see travelling in on Highway 45 is the added congestion with the tim tams & the modified traffic islands, this affects all motor vehicle users, more so the larger vehicles. Then there's the emergency service vehicles that are held up, isnt there conveyance paramount ??? I'd say so when they're providing a service to me or mine & I'd say a lot of other persons would have the same view. My opinion, is rip up all tim tams & return the natural flow back to our roads PLEASE

Commented on Facebook

Everyone now needs to bombard the npdc survey and make it clear they need to remove the lot otherwise the cycle lobby will continue to run the outcome with the tiny load minority that certain councillors bow to every time

Commented on Facebook

The rounded topped ones in the top righthand corner. Much safer to the cyclists who accidentally hit them. Much better on vehicles where you accidentally hit them or are pulling over to allow rescue services. Allow rubbish and recycling trucks to get further off the road a reach what they need to reach, and more obvious to cyclists what is happening

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Get rid of them & have shared footpaths

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Mo Clare Mob As with anything and everything installed, there is a cost to maintain. They've already proved too costly to the general public, but don't adequately serve the purpose for which they were installed. They cause hindrance and damage, block service and residential entrances, turn multi-lane intersections into bottlenecks.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Old layout, and fix the actual roads, they are a disgrace and what the funds should have been spent on in the first place

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

You are right all that money get rid of them

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

Back to the old layout please! Have witnessed two accidents. Also, vehicles needing to back out of their drives need to do so In a straight line because the concrete blocks don’t allow vehicles to manoeuvre - meaning that a courteous driver in the line of moving traffic actually needs to stop - to allow the car out of it’s driveway. Frustrating for all drivers. Have also had a close call when my car was hardly able to go into avoidance mode when another car turned too soon from a side road onto Devon St.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

No wonder our rates are so expensive with all of this unnecessary spending, the Tim Tams should never have been put there in the first place. How much has all of this cost the rate payers? How easy it is to spend other people's money

With my experience of nudging obstacles with a vehicle wheel I'm sure the separators would only drag the vehicle into the cycle lane rather than deflect it. Painted lines should be quite sufficient.!

Commented on Facebook

I have found as a daily driver to and from work Monday - Friday and weekend travel from Spotswood, 1 - very, very few cyclists use the cycle lane, 2 - I myself and plenty of others in the morning avoid Devon Street all the way from Beach Road Turning left at many possible turn offs to use Breakwater Road that turns into St Aubyn Street to avoid those horrible Tim Tams, even trying to turn left is so very dangerous.

I recently travelled to the Phillipines and witnessed how considerate and skillful drivers using all forms of transport are. I use this road for walking and riding a push bike every day.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user17 Aug 2026

I've had to travel to and from the hospital daily for the past 10 days and I've never seen a cyclist on the cycle way along the length of Devon Street from Morley Street to Lorna Street. The left turn at Lorna is difficult because I've had to avoid the badly placed Tim Tam which actually encroaches into the intersection. I've rarely traveled the Tim Tam road as I'm from north of the city. It's such a waste of everyone's rates when the cycle way is not being used.

I think they're a waste of money, but I'm not a cyclist – I'd like to be, but even with the Tim Tams, I still wouldn't trust New Plymouth drivers. 🤣 I'd like to know what the kids who might use it from the surrounding schools think, or even how they feel just from having the bigger gap from the path to the road, if they feel safer? I drive around Spotswood often and I've never had issues or worried about hitting the Tim Tams and my car is not small, but I also think they are not necessary.

Commented on Facebook
Facebook user20 Aug 2026

I think that when the Tim Tams were put in place it seemed that they took up a lot of the road, leaving the vehicle lane a little narrow, not to mention the gradient of the Tim Tams would be potentially quite damaging if say a smaller car or car in general would hit them. On the other hand, with the bumble bees they are trialing, it seems that the vehicle lane is wider and the gradient is less damaging if one slightly clipped them. So for the safety of the bike riders and the safety of vehicle drivers I vote for the Bumble Bees.
