Great news for consumers — the government will ban most payment surcharges by May 2026, including Visa and Mastercard fees.

💳🎉 Great news for New Zealand consumers! By May 2026, the government will ban most surcharges on payment machines, including for Visa and Mastercard, thanks to a new bill from Commerce Minister Scott Simpson.

The Commerce Commission has also investigated the excessive fees charged to businesses for accepting PayWave and credit card payments, and as a result these fees will be reduced.
