A strong magnitude 5.9 earthquake centered near Taumarunui has shaken the North Island, followed by a series of aftershocks.

An early morning earthquake jolted many in the North Island awake, with 22,940 people submitting "Felt" reports to GeoNet.

The quake struck at 4:51am on Saturday 25 July, originally measured at a magnitude 5.6 and then upgraded to 5.8 shortly after.

It was centred 5km south-west of Taumarunui, at a depth of just 5km.

There have been a number of "Weak" and "Light" earthquakes in the same location since, including:

- magnitude 3.4 at 5:04am, 3km deep
- magnitude 2.7 at 5:10am, 5km deep
- magnitude 2.7 at 5:10am, 5km deep
- magnitude 2.6 at 5:12am, 9km deep
- magnitude 2.6 at 5:15am, 5km deep
- magnitude 3.7 at 5:21am, 6km deep
