A man is in custody and schools were placed into lockdown as a precaution following a firearms incident on Oberon Street in Stratford.

Police advise that a man is in custody after a firearms incident in Stratford this morning.

Taranaki Area Commander Inspector Mark Miller says Police were called to Oberon Street at around 9am on Friday 7 August following a report of a person in possession of a firearm.

"It is believed the firearm was allegedly discharged. There are no reports of injuries.

"A number of schools and premises in the area were placed into lockdown as a precaution."

Cordons were also in place while Police made enquiries to locate the man.

"He has since been located and taken into custody. Charges are being considered.

"Police understand this incident will be concerning for the community and we will have an increased presence in the area."

I don’t normally comment on these things, but I think the boat was missed here in my opinion. Schools were placed in lock down at 11.50am ish So like nearly 3 hours after police were alerted to the issue?????
