The North Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association has teamed up with landowners to donate over 100kg of wild venison to local families struggling with food costs.

The North Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association have teamed up with Waitōtara landowners to provide a massive protein boost to families feeling the pinch at the supermarket.

More than 100kg of locally harvested venison has been distributed to Taranaki families following an initiative which saw 20 wild deer harvested specifically to feed the community.

Hunters shot the animals at Rimunui Station, a Waitōtara property owned by Scott and Julyanne Thompson. While the station usually hosts paid hunting trips, the couple opened their gates for the charity effort.

After being chilled on site, the carcasses were transported north to New Plymouth. Local NZDA members volunteered to break down the animals, before a local butcher processed the meat into 230 half-kilogram packs of premium venison mince.

Organisers then handed the packages over to the Body and Soul Taranaki Charitable Trust, a group distributing food to households across the region.

Trust representative Suzanne Smithers said the donation arrived at a crucial time for locals.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the donation,” Smithers said. “Having access to good-quality meat like venison makes a real difference to the families we support, particularly at a time when many households are struggling with the cost of food.”

For the hunting community, the project offers a chance to put their skills to use while solving a major headache for rural landowners.

Wild deer are a known pest for farmers, causing financial and environmental damage by destroying pasture, crops, fences, and native vegetation.

Pest control operations often leave valuable meat to waste in the bush simply to keep numbers manageable.

NZDA members want to change that approach. By connecting landowners who need pest control with experienced hunters, the group hopes to create an ongoing supply of high-quality food for those who need it most.

20 deer and only 100kg??? Guhmon sounds like this current govt. giving scraps.... we have an organisation in the south of Taranaki that does the same thing and they process the WHOLE animal for the same purpose. Recently gave 68 pkts mince to food banks here i the south... Once they are fully up n running come do a real charity story on them

A few questions from this picture that doesn't look like the cleanest environment to be butchering animals for human consumption?, is the room chilled like all other butcheries?, why doe the man in the front not wearing a steel mesh glove?, and are the animals from a registered farm or just randomly shot out of the bush?

Awesome guys. I wish to have more money, to give a proper donation to you. I dont understand why people kill edible animals because they are pests, while some people dont have enough food. Its irrational for my point of view. But, I want to focus in the positive. Thanks guys, thanks for making a better world.

This should be done in stead of dropping 1080 employ hunters to trap and kill all the pest and donate to food banks and community's free or for a small donation make the poor animals death worth something than a slow horrible death..I would love to get some my mum and I are really struggling mince is so expensive once a month we go to woolworths and get the three for 20.00..

It would be great if more hunters did this, whether its was Wild Beef, Wild Sheep, Red, Fallow, Sika, Wapiti, Saba, Rusa, White Tail Deer, Himalayan Tahr, Chamois, Goat, Pig, Wallaby, Rabbit, Hare, Swan, Ducks, Canadian Geese, from areas where numbers are out of control and rather than leaving dead animals out there. Taking these animals to registered Maf certified butchers for processing. Butchered as mince, stirfry, stewing steak or slow cook cuts. With for example Maggi slow cooker pkts, or Asian green chillies or red chillies, sauces, Indian spice blend sauces, or Italian or French ragu recipes etc. Delivering to all the food banks around the country, Kainga Ora agencies to deliver to their tenants, iwi for distribution to those they support etc.
