Heavy rainfall causes sewage overflow

A sewer overflow into the Tasman Sea via the Eliot Street outfall was caused by high and intense rainfall on Thursday (15 January) night.

The intense rainfall overwhelmed the Te Henui Pump Station and our team responded to get it up and running again.

The overflow started at 8.21pm and stopped at 9.15pm. Warning signs against swimming for 48 hours and collecting kai for 28 days have been erected at various locations.

We’re sorry this has occurred, and we’ve notified iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, Health New Zealand Taranaki, and other recreational groups.

Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website. We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district's plumbing.
