For our November Seniors program, the new director of the gallery Megan Dunn shares her adventures from New Zealand to Britain and back working in bookstores, becoming an acclaimed author, art critic, essayist, chairing literary events, and directing art spaces and galleries along the way. You are warmly invited to join Megan for a meet and greet and hear about her plans for the gallery.

 

Bio: Megan Dunn is an experienced curator, arts commentator, writer, and project manager, and joins us from the role of Special Projects Curator, Experience Wellington. Megan has been involved in the Govett-Brewster at various points – as an exhibiting artist in the 2000 exhibition In Glorious Dreams, as a multiple Monica Brewster Evening guest, and occasional reviewer.

Dunn is the author of three irreverent works of non-fiction: Tinderbox (Galley Beggar Press, 2017), her memoir in essays Things I Learned at Art School (Penguin Random House New Zealand, 2021) and The Mermaid Chronicles: A Midlife Mer-moir (Penguin Random House New Zealand, 2024). In his review of The Mermaid Chronicles, Guy Somerset writes of Megan: ‘I would read her on anything and follow her writing anywhere.’

Megan has published columns, reviews, personal essays and features for a wide range of media including the Guardian Australia, The New Zealand Listener, Metro, Newsroom and Art News New Zealand. She was once the visual arts correspondent on Radio New Zealand’s Saturday morning show, with broadcaster Kim Hill.

 

Govett-Brewster Seniors offers a monthly dose of art and culture, with free-flowing conversations and experiences of contemporary art based on, in and around the Gallery’s current exhibitions and events. No knowledge of art is needed.
Seniors takes place from 10am – 11am on the second Friday of each month, with many regulars gathering next door at Monica’s Eatery for a coffee at 9.30am.
