Looking for ways to burn off that endless kid energy? Taranaki is brilliant for families. Rather than massive theme parks, we're all about hands-on nature, quirky museums, and spots where they can run wild and free.
From getting up close with monkeys to exploring a pioneer village, here are the top picks for keeping the tamariki happy.
1. Hang out with the animals at Brooklands Zoo
It’s completely free, and it's awesome. Tucked away in Pukekura Park, Brooklands Zoo has everything from cotton-top tamarins and meerkats to an absolute classic farmyard area. It's the perfect size for toddlers and young kids to wander around without getting too tired.
2. Step back in time at Taranaki Pioneer Village
Located just south of Stratford, this is an open-air museum set out like an olden-day town. Kids love taking a ride on the 'Stratford Express' miniature train and running in and out of the historic old hospital, schoolhouse, and jail.
3. Make a splash at Todd Energy Aquatic Centre
If the weather packs in, this indoor/outdoor pool complex in New Plymouth is a lifesaver. There’s a wave pool, a lazy river, hydro slides, and a dive pool. You're guaranteed they'll sleep well after a couple of hours here!
4. Explore Pukekura Park
It's right in the middle of town, but it feels like a different world. Hire a rowboat to take out on the main lake, check out the fernery, or just let them loose on the massive playgrounds. It’s even better in summer when the Festival of Lights is on!
Toss some snacks in the bag, slop on some sunscreen, and get out there!
5. Fun Ho! National Toy Museum
A brilliant little spot in Inglewood where kids can see classic toys and watch the manufacturing process in action. It’s interactive, nostalgic, and they might even leave with a sturdy metal tractor that will last a lifetime.
6. Taranaki Cycle Park
Found at the Bell Block end of the Coastal Walkway, this cycle park features a mini road network complete with give-way signs, a roundabout, and speed bumps. It’s the perfect, safe environment for kids to gain confidence on their bikes or scooters without worrying about real traffic.
7. Mount Panorama Mini Putt
Attached to the Hillsborough Holden Museum, this 18-hole indoor mini-putt course is themed to replicate the famous Mount Panorama race track in Bathurst. It’s surprisingly challenging and a heap of fun for kids and absolutely ruthless competitive parents alike.
8. Mangamahoe Mountain Bike Park
If your kids are slightly older and love hitting the dirt, bring the bikes down to Lake Mangamahoe. The park features dedicated trails ranging from easy cruisy beginner loops to serious downhill runs. Pack a picnic, it’s a brilliant day out.
