New Plymouth District Council has cancelled bin collections today as an Orange Strong Wind Warning remains in place for Taranaki with gusts of up to 130km/h.

Update 9:40am: NPDC has cancelled today's bin collection.

NPDC says "today's bin collection will go ahead as usual, however we will do a second run tomorrow if you want to hold on to your bins until tomorrow morning. If your bins are emptied today, please take them off the street as soon as it is safe to do so."

There are multiple reports of downed trees and damage throughout the region.

An Orange Strong Wind Warning is in place for Taranaki until 4pm today, with damaging gusts of up to 130km/h in exposed places, especially north of the mountain.

MetService says "Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures possible. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles."
