Roading UpdateRoading Awakino Gorge
State Highway 3 through Awakino Gorge has reopened to 24/7 traffic under stop-go management following storm recovery work.

State Highway 3 through Awakino Gorge has reopened without convoyd as of 5pm Friday 22nd May, under a mix of two-way traffic and stop/go traffic management.

Crews have been working through the Gorge to clear slips and debris following heavy rainfall and storms in mid April.

While the road is now open 24/7, restrictions are expected to remain for some time while recovery work continues in a few areas, including where the biggest slip is currently being "benched."

Expect delays of up to 60 minutes and queues at times. Travel times will vary depending on traffic volumes, work activity and site conditions. Temporary speed limits and traffic management will remain in place to keep everyone safe while work continues, so this is not yet a return to normal operating conditions.

NZTA says they are continuing to closely monitor the Awakino Gorge and the major slip site using a range of methods and on-site observations. They have a plan in place to determine the response when conditions become riskier than normal, including rainfall and site checks. If safety thresholds are reached, they may need to adjust access or close the road at short notice, and will reopen as quickly as possible when conditions improve and engineers confirm it's safe.

They urge motorists to plan ahead, allow extra time, drive to the conditions, and follow all signs and traffic management.
