A Taranaki teen has been arrested and charged with wilful damage to 13 cars across Waitara and New Plymouth, with police inquiries ongoing and a second youth also facing charges.

CCTV from a Waitara street appears to show a teen climbing onto parked cars and stomping their windscreens; a spree that left more than a dozen vehicles damaged across Waitara and New Plymouth.

Police have arrested a young person who will appear in the New Plymouth Youth Court on 4 September. The teen faces charges of wilful damage to 13 cars and other alleged offending, including robbery. Because the accused is under 17, their identity is suppressed.

Business owners and residents say the damage was discovered last week, with footage shared online helping officers piece together what happened. Police say a second youth has also been charged, and further charges are possible as inquiries continue.

For the victims, the immediate cost is smashed glass, higher insurance excesses and vehicles off the road. For the wider community, it’s another reminder that a small group of offenders can cause outsized harm, and that consequences matter.

The case will be handled in the Youth Court, which focuses on accountability alongside rehabilitation. Outcomes can include reparation, community work, programmes that address the causes of offending, and, in more serious cases, supervision with residence.

Plenty of locals are asking tougher questions too; where are the parents, and who pays for the damage? Others stress early intervention, saying mentoring and better supports can steer kids away from repeat offending.

Police are asking anyone who had their car damaged, or who has information, to contact New Plymouth Police. Details around bail and any additional charges will be for the court to decide.
