"Trains Taranaki" will present a petition to Parliament on Tuesday 30 June, calling on the Government to reinstate regular passenger rail services connecting New Plymouth, Whanganui, Palmerston North, and Wellington.
The petition reflects surging public support for improved regional transport and highlights the urgent need to reconnect communities across the lower North Island with safe, sustainable, and inclusive public transport.
“Passenger rail has the potential to reconnect our communities and provide a practical transport choice for thousands of people across the region,” said Louise James, spokesperson for Trains Taranaki. “A modern regional rail service would support economic development, tourism, education, and access to essential services, all while helping New Zealand meet its climate and transport goals.”
The call for rail resonates deeply with families and travellers frustrated by the challenges of long-distance road travel. Supporter Denise Owen noted, “What a fabulous trip it would be to travel to Wellington by train. I regularly drive my grandchildren there, and it is a nightmare involving toilet and food stops, car sickness, fighting, and seatbelts. How lovely it would be to be free to walk around and have all the amenities onboard.”
Advocates argue that as changing demographics, rising living costs, and environmental concerns place greater pressure on existing transport networks, investing in regional rail is no longer optional. Supporters point to several critical benefits of restoring the service:
- Enhanced Connectivity: Providing essential mobility for those unable or unwilling to drive.
- Environmental Impact: Significantly reducing transport emissions to align with national climate targets.
- Safety and Resilience: Alleviating pressure on regional roads and improving overall transport safety.
Currently, the Taranaki Regional Council (TRC) includes an action in its Regional Land Transport Plan to advocate for and study the feasibility of this service. However, advocates note the project currently lacks the priority needed to move from paper to reality.
Recently, KiwiRail confirmed to the TRC Transport Committee that KiwiRail can provide technical advice regarding the rail corridor, but the Council is responsible for initiating the feasibility study.
Trains Taranaki hopes that presenting this petition to Parliament will demonstrate undeniable public backing, prompting the Government to commit to the necessary planning and investment, and encouraging the TRC to urgently advance the feasibility study.
