Look, it rains in Taranaki—that’s just a fact of life around the mountain and why everything is so incredibly green! But a wet day doesn't mean you're stuck sitting inside your accommodation staring at the wall.
We've got an absolute brilliant line-up of indoor spots, from world-class art galleries to fascinating museums. Here's how to dodge the showers and still have an epic day out.
Govett-Brewster Art Gallery & Len Lye Centre
You literally can't miss it—it's the massive wavy mirrored building in the middle of New Plymouth. Inside, you'll find contemporary art and the insanely cool kinetic sculptures of Len Lye. The sculptures move, crash, and whirr—it’s mesmerizing stuff and perfect for killing a couple of rainy hours.
Puke Ariki
Right on the waterfront, Puke Ariki is our local museum, library, and information centre all rolled into one. You can dive deep into Taranaki's history, check out interactive exhibits, and stay completely dry while you do it.
Tawhiti Museum
Down near Hāwera, this is widely considered one of the best private museums in the country. Nigel Ogle uses incredibly detailed life-size figures and scale models to tell the history of the region. It’s seriously impressive, and the 'Traders and Whalers' indoor river ride hidden underneath is incredible.
Fenton Street Arts Collective
Head up to Stratford and chill out here. They roast their own coffee, distil their own gin, and have an awesome art gallery attached. Sitting inside with a hot coffee (or a gin) while the rain pours outside? Heaven.
So chuck on a raincoat, dash between the car and the door, and get stuck into Taranaki's indoor highlights!
Fun Ho! National Toy Museum
Head out to Inglewood and take a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The Fun Ho! museum is packed with vintage sand-cast aluminium toys that were a staple in backyards across New Zealand. You can even watch them being made in the foundry on-site!
Todd Energy Aquatic Centre
When it's wet outside, you might as well get wet inside! This aquatic centre in New Plymouth features a wave pool, hydro slides, a sauna, and a spa pool. It’s guaranteed entertainment for the family and a great way to blow off steam.
Bowlarama
Nothing beats a classic game of ten-pin bowling when the sky opens up. Bowlarama offers cosmic bowling, an arcade, and an indoor mini-putt course. Grab some hot chips and embrace the competitive spirit.
Hillsborough Holden Museum
Located near New Plymouth, this museum is a stunning tribute to the iconic Australian car manufacturer. Even if you aren't a massive rev-head, the collection is beautifully presented, and they have an indoor mini-putt course themed around Mount Panorama!
