New Plymouth District Council has appointed infrastructure veteran Anthony Wilson as the new chairperson of the Wai Hononga Water Services Limited board.

NPDC has appointed infrastructure veteran Anthony Wilson as the new chairperson of the Wai Hononga Water Services Limited board.

The appointment follows the resignation of the previous chair, Michael Sage, who stepped down from the role in May.

Mr Wilson brings nearly 50 years of experience in managing, operating and delivering major infrastructure programmes across New Zealand.

He is widely recognised within the industry as a leading voice on water sector reform and regulation.

New Plymouth District Mayor Max Brough said the appointment arrives at a critical moment for the organisation as it continues to set up its operations.

"Anthony brings a rare combination of governance expertise, regulatory knowledge and practical operational experience," Mayor Brough said.

"His understanding of water utilities and customer expectations will be invaluable as Wai Hononga Water Services Ltd continues its establishment journey."

Mr Wilson previously served as an establishment board member for Taumata Arowai, the national water services authority, between 2021 and 2025.

His extensive governance career also includes terms as national chairperson for both Water New Zealand and Engineering New Zealand.

Additionally, he was one of three panel members chosen for the high-profile Havelock North Drinking Water Inquiry and has served as an expert adviser to the Auditor-General on specialist water investigations.

The remaining members of the board include Onno Mulder, Sara Brownlie, Kim Skelton and Joshua Hitchcock.
