Construction on the next stage of Eltham’s Town Centre Revitalisation will begin in early June 2026, with upgrades to Stark Park set to transform the space into a refreshed, community-focused destination.
The vision for Stark Park was first identified by the Eltham community in 2019, following feedback on the Eltham Town Revitalisation Plan (formerly the Eltham Town Masterplan).
In 2022, a co-design group comprising local business owners, hapū representatives, youth and community members helped shape the design, ensuring it reflects local priorities and aspirations.
The Stark Park upgrade builds on other recent improvements in Eltham, including new wayfinding signage, the repainting of light poles, bollards and rubbish bins, and the installation of a new fully fenced 3x3 basketball court.
Council Community Development Manager David Pentz says the project reflects a strong, shared commitment to enhancing the town centre.
“This upgrade is about creating a welcoming, vibrant space for the community while retaining the character people already value,” says David.
“Much-loved features such as the commemorative stone statue and central tree will be retained, and the park’s informational signage will be refreshed to align with the new wayfinding.
“Care will also be taken to protect and preserve the mosaic artworks on the boundary wall. However, due to the deteriorated condition of their backing boards, there is some risk to their long-term survival. Every reasonable effort will be made to retain the mosaics, but if this is not achievable, the tiles will be carefully collected and repurposed so their legacy can continue in another form.”
South Taranaki District Mayor Phil Nixon says the upgrade reflects ongoing investment in Eltham’s future.
“Projects like this help ensure our smaller town centres continue to thrive and remain great places to live, work and visit.”
During construction, parts of Stark Park will be temporarily closed, with some disruption expected over several months. Pedestrian access to nearby facilities may also be affected, and
residents are encouraged to take care when moving through the area. Please note that vehicle and pedestrian access from Bridge Street through to the car park will be permanently closed, as this is private property.
