Weeks after opening, Destination Kāwaroa playground is installing a new shade structure, built by local firm Bullitt Fabrications, to address community feedback and enhance visitor comfort during summer.

Destination Kāwaroa keeps evolving. Just weeks after opening its final stages on 15 August 2025, the waterfront park is adding a shade structure to give families relief from the summer sun. The new canopy is being built by local firm Bullitt Fabrications, one of the products and services partners behind the $7 million project.

Community feedback has been clear: the playground is a hit, but there’s not enough shade. With up to 2,000 people visiting each day since Stage 1 opened in December 2024, finding a spot to cool off has been a challenge. It’s a modest addition, but it makes the space more usable on hot days.

Destination Kāwaroa is the result of a five‑year collaboration between Taranaki Foundation, Ngāti Te Whiti, New Plymouth District Council and NP Partners. The park transforms Kāwaroa Park into an inclusive coastal playground with water play, slides, a pump track and exercise areas. Funding came from more than $7 million in donations and grants.

Bullitt Fabrications’ involvement reinforces the local flavour of the project. The company was listed among donors who contributed products or services worth $5,000 or more. By commissioning a Taranaki firm to fabricate and install the new structure, organisers keep jobs and expertise in the region while improving the park for locals and visitors alike.
