Regulator New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals has awarded a 10-year petroleum mining permit to Matahio NZ Onshore Limited for the Puka field in onshore Taranaki.

A new 10-year petroleum mining permit has been granted for the Puka field in onshore Taranaki.

Regulator New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals (NZP&M) awarded the permit to Matahio NZ Onshore Limited today.

The approved area covers about 19 square kilometres and includes the existing Puka field as well as the promising Oru prospect.

Discovered in 2012, the Puka site holds estimated recoverable reserves of 170,000 barrels of oil and 1.3 billion cubic feet of gas.

An independent assessment of the nearby Oru prospect points to prospective resources of 1.8 million barrels of oil and 1.2 billion cubic feet of gas.

Resources Minister Shane Jones welcomed the decision as a boost for national energy security.

"As only the second petroleum mining permit to be granted in the past eight years but one of two granted in the last year or so, this is yet another signal that momentum in New Zealand's petroleum sector is growing," Jones said.

He pointed out that natural gas will remain a critical part of the national energy mix for decades to come.

"It supports electricity generation during periods of low hydro inflows and renewable generation, and it provides energy and feedstock for many businesses that are important to our economy," he said.

All gas produced in New Zealand is consumed domestically by industrial users and for electricity generation.

High-quality light oil extracted in Taranaki is typically exported to international markets and refined into various petroleum products.

Jones added that extra oil from the Puka field will generate export earnings and contribute to regional economic activity in Taranaki.

While acknowledging that a single permit will not fix the country's broader energy challenges, he believes the region's natural resources have a clear role alongside renewable technologies.

"A resilient energy system requires diversity," Jones said. "New Zealand needs all of these components working together to deliver affordable, secure and reliable energy for households and businesses."

For scale, 39.9 PJ of Māui gas is roughly 37.7 Bcf. So Oru’s 3.9 Bcf mid-case is only about 10% of Māui’s remaining 2P gas reserves as they stood at the start of 2025.its a very very small field compared to Maui.

I love it when these companies take Maori names when Maori have no say on their management and profit nothing from them. Second, you know something is bad when it needs to be fast tracked behind closed doors and without public input... Just imagine if Maori did that for things we wanted to do like protecting our lakes, rivers and streams from polluters... Or fund Marae as they are used as focal points within communities especially during civil defense emergencies. Or conservation of our forests. There would be an OUTRAGE from people... Hypocrisy alright...

Those numbers wouldn't be economical to commercialize but maybe there are other larger prospects near by. Puka is a little way east of Eltham, so cartage or pipelines would cost a good deal extra. The company from England which is going to take over the existing company (owner), doesn't have the money to develop it at present.

Over 80% of the reserves are in Southland lignite deposits. These were worth $100 billion in 2010.[1] Steven Lawrence Metallurgical coal is an essential ingredient in the production of steel, making it one of the most widely used building materials on earth. It takes around 770 kilograms of coal to make one ton of steel, with approximately 70 per cent of global steel produced in basic oxygen blast furnaces. Thanks coal Now we have good grade steel too make cars coal to make 1 kWh? Coal–1.14 pounds/kWh. Natural gas–7.42 cubic feet/kWh. Thanks coal 1 .14 pounds of coal electric generation equals one kwh of electricity Or If that electric power is used too make hydrogen fuel for cars How much electrical energy does it take to make a kilogramme of hydrogen in an electrolyser? A survey of the major manufacturers suggests a figure of about 50 kWh at present for both Alkaline and PEM electrolysers. Put an energy value of 50 kWh of electricity in and get hydrogen out with an energy value of 33.3 kWh, or 67% efficiency. Alkaline and PEM electrolysers offer performance of this level but Solid Oxide electrolysers already offer 80% conversion of electricity to hydrogen.
