Taranaki iwi have placed a temporary rāhui across the entire Pouākai Range following the death of a tramper in Egmont National Park on Friday.

Taranaki iwi have placed a rāhui across the entire Pouākai Range following the death of a tramper in Egmont National Park / Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki.

Police and the Department of Conservation confirmed the person died on Friday afternoon while walking the Pouākai Track. Emergency services brought in a helicopter to help recover the body from the mountain.

Police haven't released the person's identity yet. A spokesperson says enquiries into the death are ongoing but they expect it'll be referred to the Coroner.

A rāhui is a temporary Māori customary prohibition or restriction placed on an area or resource to manage its use, protect natural resources or honour the sacredness following a death.

The rāhui came into effect on Friday and will run until 2 pm on Monday, March 23.
