          Watch: Awakino Gorge Hit by Extensive Flooding and Slips, State Highways Closed

          Severe weather has caused extensive flooding and multiple slips in the Awakino Gorge, leading to the closure of State Highways 3 and 4 and stranding vehicles.

          Severe weather has caused flooding, slips and state highway closures, including Taranaki’s two routes north – state highways 3 and 4. Awakino Gorge will remain closed until the slips can be cleared and the road made safe by contractors who are on scene.

          Police are aware of some vehicles that are stranded as a result, and a helicopter is searching for trapped residents.

          The following state highways are currently closed. NZTA advises motorists to avoid these areas:

          • SH3 Mokau to Piopio – SLIPS

          • SH4 Te Mapara to Taumarunui – SLIPS

          • SH30 Te Kuiti to Benneydale – FLOODING

          • SH31 Tihiroa to Kawhia – SLIPS

          • SH43 Taumarunui to Whangamōmona – SLIPS

          All other state highways remain open. NZTA advises motorists to avoid all non-essential travel and consider delaying your journey.

          Latest update from NZTA at 4pm

          State Highway 3 north of New Plymouth remains closed at Awakino between Mokau and Piopio. There are multiple, smaller slips further south towards New Plymouth. SH3 at Tongapōrutu is down to one lane and under stop/go with a 30km temporary speed limit in place in place.

          State Highway 4 remains closed between Eight Mile Junction (the intersection between SH3 and SH4) and Taumarunui.

          State Highway 43 Forgotten World Highway remains closed from Whangamōmona to Taumarunui. Access remains open from Stratford to Whangamōmona.
