So you want to stretch your legs around Taranaki? Well, you've come to the right place. We're pretty blessed here with the majestic Mount Taranaki sitting right in our backyard, surrounded by lush rainforests, thundering waterfalls, and sweeping coastal trails.
Whether you're keen on a cruisy walk with the family or a full-on calf-burning trek up the maunga, we've got you sorted. Here are a few must-do hikes around the region.
1. The Legendary Pouākai Crossing
If you only do one tramp while you're here, make it this one. It’s Taranaki’s answer to the Tongariro Crossing, taking you across the slopes of the mountain past the famous reflective tarns. Pro tip: pick a clear day if you want that perfect reflection shot for Insta!
2. Walk Through the 'Goblin Forest' to Dawson Falls
Head up to the Dawson Falls side of the mountain and you'll find yourself walking through a forest that straight up looks like it's out of Lord of the Rings. It's properly magical with twisted kamahi trunks dripping in moss. The track down to the falls is an easy stroll, and seeing the 18-metre drop up close is pretty epic.
3. Manganui Gorge Track
This is a solid option if you're after alpine views without doing a multi-day hike. It takes you across a pretty sweet suspension bridge over a deep gorge, right into the heart of the ski area. Just watch your step in winter!
4. Wilkies Pools
A super easy, family-friendly wander up to a series of natural plunge pools formed by ancient lava flows. The water is freezing, but you'll usually spot a few brave locals taking a dip anyway!
5. Mount Taranaki Summit Track
For those who want to conquer the peak, this track is not for the faint-hearted. It’s a steep, challenging climb primarily suited for the summer months unless you are experienced in mountaineering. The reward? Unbeatable panoramic views that stretch all the way to Mount Ruapehu on a clear day.
6. Mangorei Track to Pouakai Tarn
If you want that iconic reflection shot of Mount Taranaki without doing the full crossing, the Mangorei Track is your best bet. It involves a lot of boardwalk stairs through beautiful native forest, leading up to the Pouakai Hut and the famous tarns.
7. Stony River Walkway (Hangatahua)
A beautiful and slightly lesser-known track that follows the Hangatahua (Stony) River. It’s rich in history and offers stunning views of the riverbed with the mountain towering in the background. Perfect for a peaceful morning walk.
8. Rātapihipihi Scenic Reserve Track
Located uncomfortably close to New Plymouth but feeling worlds away, this reserve features a gorgeous loop walk through dense native bush. It’s a great spot for bird watching and getting a quick nature fix without driving far.
9. Lake Mangamahoe
This lake is surrounded by a sprawling network of trails. While mountain bikers love it, there are also dedicated walking tracks offering some of the best reflections of the mountain on a still morning. The circuit walk is highly recommended.
10. Whitecliffs Walkway
Heading north of New Plymouth, this track takes you along the dramatic coastline, over rolling farmland, and past the iconic three sisters rock formations. Check the tides before you go, as parts of the return journey can be done along the beach.
Make sure you pack layers when you head up the mountain—the weather changes faster than a rugby referee's mind. Catch ya out on the trails!
