Update from NZTA: "Workers have finished replacing 2 ageing culverts on SH3 near Ahititi with modern structures you see in the photo below.
Culverts are channels that help guide water away from a road and to a waterway, reducing the risk of flooding and damage to the road in bad weather, as well as erosion over time.
The two new culverts on State Highway 3 are designed to last for the next 100 years.
We upgraded the old culverts before they could fail because, as we all know, SH3 is a vital road for communities, freight to get goods and services to you, and for tourism.
The road is much safer and more resilient now with the upgraded culverts.
We had to close the road for a few days to install the first new culvert in January – thanks again for your patience and understanding.
For the second culvert, we’ve been able to use a temporary bridge to keep people moving.
We’ve now removed all temporary traffic management onsite, and the road is back to normal.
