The new pedestrian space around the Queen Street Cenotaph is complete, with seating, planting and safety improvements in place.

🌴 Finishing touches are complete for the new pedestrian space around the Cenotaph on Queen Street, with planter boxes, seating, bollards and road markings now in place.

The road has reopened in one direction, with entry open to left-turning traffic from St Aubyn Street.

The temporary changes, co-funded by NZTA Waka Kotahi, are designed to improve safety for pedestrians, drivers and visitors to the War Memorial.

After 12 months, a report will be provided to elected members containing road user data, public feedback and behavioural observations that will inform future decisions on the site.

Have you been to check it out yet?

Yes - I think they have done a very good job here . Except - WHY are there 4 car parks along the sea-ward edge of the War Memorial itself ?- Couldn' that area have beenn left blank or coloured Greeen to create the ambiance of the War Memeorial being in a garden and not on the edge of a car park!! - Whiskey Walker

Wasted money yet again. If there were daily crowds looking at the Memorial id say well done but there isnt. Other than ANZAC day and the roads closed then anyway. Just another legacy build. Its about time this bloody council told us of all this pre signed of legacy projects so we know what BS we still have up coming... And as for 10 yr plans approved... why is there new plans created and signed off when we not even started works on plans from several yrs back. Transparency would be great but nothing comes out of council except higher rates, unwanted projects and fip flopped councilors. All a bunch of clowns in my view.

Not sure if it is in the annual maintenance plans but surely it should be + that is the actual cleaning of the centotaph. Photos do not show it, but it is actually quite mossy up close.

Fake grass is a sad choice, car parks taken away and put back in silly places. Feels like you are sitting in the middle of the road.

This was needed to protect the cenotaph from traffic. Like the seating area. 🙂

Why the very out of place blue bits ? and the low key no entry signs, as of course it never happens that people drive down a one way street in New Plymouth.... don't get me wrong as a vetran myself it's nice to see the cenotaph front n center but the blue bits still don't work for me, and why the Nzta is part funding this is confusing to say the least, when the hyway network is broken.
