People who live in or have a connection with the New Plymouth district are encouraged to share their views and help shape the future of local government in Taranaki.
NPDC’s Shaping Taranaki’s Future survey opened today and is the first opportunity for New Plymouth district locals to provide input into what the region’s local government structure may look like in the future.
It asks what matters to people when it comes to local governance and decision-making, the opportunities and challenges facing New Plymouth and Taranaki and any thoughts or concerns people may have about the reforms.
The Government’s Simplifying Local Government changes aim to significantly reduce the number of councils across the country through the creation of unitary authorities. Changes are likely to start taking effect from 2028.
NPDC is taking part in the Government’s streamlined Head Start pathway, which gives councils the chance to submit a reorganisation proposal that works for their region, rather than waiting for wider nationwide reform.
New Plymouth District Mayor Max Brough says councillors agreed NPDC should drive that work rather than do nothing and be part of the alternate Back Stop pathway.
“That would mean sitting back and letting the Government decide our future, which is unlikely to give New Plymouth or Taranaki the best possible outcome.”
Councils on the Head Start pathway have until 9 August to submit a high-level outline proposal.
“This survey is just the first stage of a longer work programme,” says Mayor Max.
“Any outline proposal will not lock us into a final outcome but gives us a steer as to the general direction of travel.”
There will be more in-depth public, mana whenua and stakeholder consultation before any detailed proposal is lodged next year.
South Taranaki and Stratford District Councils are also working on a Head Start outline proposal, with councils continuing to look for opportunities for regional alignment.
Mayor Max says regional and district council services affect everyone – whether it’s their local library, roads, buses or biosecurity.
“This is a once in a lifetime overhaul of local government so I encourage people to get involved by completing the survey. You can also talk to me or any elected member about your views.
“These reforms will shape our district and region for many years to come, so it’s vital we get it right. Please do take the time to get informed and get involved.”
